Bitcoin showed the world that peer-to-peer digital value was possible — without middlemen, without borders, without permission. By 2024, the network had processed over $15 trillion in transactions. But Bitcoin had a fatal flaw: every transaction was public forever.

But Bitcoin was slow, expensive, and public. Billions still couldn't pay rent, buy groceries, or send money home without banks taking their cut.

The World Bank reports the average cost to send $200 across borders is 6.2% — that's $48 billion drained from the world's poorest families every year. In Sub-Saharan Africa, fees average 7.9%. A worker in Dubai sending money home to Lagos loses a week's groceries in transfer fees alone. Bitcoin's 10-minute blocks, $2-50 fees, and fully public ledger made it useless for daily payments. Every chain that followed — Ethereum, Cardano, Avalanche — had the same problem: your balance is public. Your transactions are tracked. The gap between promise and reality was enormous.

For the first time, a high-throughput blockchain could process confidential transactions — hiding sender, receiver, and amount — at 65,000 TPS with sub-second finality.
